This is my first attempt to engraft a wild olive rootstock using the crown grafting method. The proper period for olive tree spring grafting is April. This particular grafting took place on April 5, 2011.

The equipment that I use consists of: A pruning saw, a garden pruner, a grafting knife, grafting wax, some raffia rope (natural plant rope).

I take the following steps:

I cut off the wild trunk about 30 cm above ground.

I clear the remaining offshoots and twigs.

I make a vertical incision in the bark approximately 4 cm long until I reach the inner wood. I try to choose the smoothest possible region of the bark (without major curves and knots).

I gently detach the bark from one side only, using the spatula of my grafting knife.

I do the same right across the first incision.

I choose two scions coming from the cultivar that I desire.

I cut the scions diagonally in the beginning and then I an angle with the help of which they will “step” onto the stock. I leave 2-3 buds on each scion.

I apply the scion by sliding it into the slot in the bark. I look after that the scion-stock barks are in touch constantly.

I do the same with the other scion.

I tie the slots around using the raffia, squeezing gently.

I coat incisions and raffia with the grafting wax. I never forget to coat the top edge of each scion.

I cut a thin, long and flexible twig out of the fallen wild olive tree. I clear it of little twigs and leaves, bend it and tie it above and around the scions. In this way I protect the scions from birds.

Done. Wish me luck!

  1. Nice job! We have had some of your countrymen start olive orchards over the last 100 year in Californias, but many present day farmers are trying to establish new olive orchards here as well. Best wishes to your grafting success!

  2. Very nice amigo! Here in Cuba we like olives very much and now that we can engraft we can be much more productive.

  3. I have never seen a real olive tree, also never tasted fresh olive fruits. I have only eaten those preserved ones. The information on grafting provided here is very detailed and I think you did a great job.

  4. Thank you for this link you posted on my blog – it is very interesting. I presume it is too late in the year to do this now ?

@Autumn Belle : you cannot eat the fruits off the trees – they are too bitter. They have to go through a process to make them edible.

  5. No, it's not too late. Especially if the weather was bad until now, the better job will be done. The weather in Greece was very rainy in April and May, which is a very bad thing for the new engraftments.
